On the Road and at the (Solemn Uplifting)

[Verse 1] Two travelers left Jerusalem With dust along their sleeves The hill behind had taken hope From everything they believed They spoke of nails and broken bread Of promises laid low While evening gathered on the road And neither knew the One who walked below [Verse 2] He asked them why their hearts were low They told the story plain The prophet mighty in the word Had suffered shame and pain Then from the law and prophets' pages He traced the mercy's thread How every promise pointed on Through wounded hands and living breath [Chorus] Stay with us, the day is fading Stay with us, our hearts are waking In the breaking of the bread Hope was standing where death had been Stay with us, our eyes are opening Christ is risen, Christ is near On the road, through every sorrow You are walking with us here [Verse 3] They reached the village as the dusk Turned purple over stone He moved as though He would go on But they would not dine alone They set the loaf before Him there He blessed it, broke, and gave Their eyes were opened in that room And joy stood shining from the grave [Bridge] Were not our hearts a burning lamp While He unfolded grace? The Scriptures sang of sacrifice And mercy took a face So they returned beneath the stars To tell what they had seen The crucified, the living Lord Had met them on the road between [Chorus] Stay with us, the day is fading Stay with us, our hearts are waking In the breaking of the bread Hope was standing where death had been Stay with us, our eyes are opening Christ is risen, Christ is near On the road, through every sorrow You are walking with us here [Final Chorus] Stay with us, our hearts are singing Stay with us, the bells are ringing In the breaking of the bread Love has conquered fear and death Stay with us, our eyes are opening Christ is risen, Christ is here On the road and at the table You will walk with us through every year [Outro] On the road and at the table You will walk with us through every year
