In seinem Roman „Die Insel der Pinguine" („L'Île des Pingouins") befasst sich der Autor Anatole France in satirischer Form vorwiegend mit allerlei Episoden aus der französischen Geschichte. Ganz allgemein bleiben aber auch die Kirche und die christlich-abendländischen Traditionen nicht vom Spott des Autors verschont. Obschon der Roman bereits 1908 erstmals erschienen ist, fühlt man sich beim Lesen immer wieder an aktuelle Geschehnisse aus Politik und Gesellschaft erinnert.
